But that doesn’t mean your board should ignore this warning. Will they hear it from Anthropic or your security leader? Or from the news coverage of the coming wave of breaches and hacks?

Models are getting better and faster at finding bugs. Most risk sits in legacy systems, vendor products, OT and embedded devices, unmaintained code, misconfigurations, poor practices, and process failures.

Discovery is not the constraint and never has been. Remediation capacity and prioritization is. We continue pushing vulnerabilities into prod at high rates. Configuration still misses quite often. The volume of findings will rise faster than most organizations can prioritize and fix them.

Who can clear this bar?

Who can clear this bar? Not many hospitals, school districts, cities, or mid-market companies. Those are the most targeted and least resourced orgs out there.

Anthropic’s choices here measure whether a company is big and public. They don’t measure whether the person asking is a real defender. They gatekeep around bug bounties, which many are dropping, public filings, or some public hacker persona. They assume a defender doesn’t need offensive capabilities for testing.

When I started building agentic workflows in n8n, I kept running into performance and token consumption problems processing formats like epub, pdf, and the ms office *.docx/pptx/xlsx

When I started building agentic workflows in n8n, I kept running into performance and token consumption problems processing formats like epub, pdf, and the ms office *.docx/pptx/xlsx. Stripping them down to markdown was the obvious fix since the content mattered more than the form.

I ended up with a node to process each format into markdown. It dramatically improved accuracy and let me run the better models without sacrificing my credit card (and marriage) over to the token gods, or to use local models without brown outs or melted cables at home.

Wild watching so many businesses race to deploy AI as the answer to everything

Wild watching so many businesses race to deploy AI as the answer to everything. Open-weight models and no-guardrails frontier systems wired into agents doing who knows what.

We heard all about it with ransomware too, right up until payroll stopped running, the water company couldn’t invoice, supply chains broke, and hospitals had to drop to paper. It’s all hype, security folks always cry wolf, they’re the department of no, and they slow us down.

Giving a talk today at the Arkansas IT Symposium in Little Rock

Giving a talk today at the Arkansas IT Symposium in Little Rock. Proud to represent Simmons Foods and emphasize our Be Curious values.

I looked back at my original outline a couple weeks ago. It’s wild watching the narrative shift over the last three to six months. The conversation moved from “AI users replace non-AI users” to “curious users beat complacent ones.”

When someone on my team asks if they should still go after their CCNA, AZ-104, or CKA, my answer is still yes. But the caveat that used to be a suggestion is now a requirement. They’ve got to lab it.

We have one shot

We have one shot. Don’t squander it.

I remember spending summers at the town library digging in Popular Science magazines for the latest cool thing. Then the internet put the world’s knowledge at our fingertips. It seemed everything was available on IRC. Now, we’ve moved from searching for information to natural language conversations with it. What a time to be alive.

AI has in it the ability to be the ultimate 24/7 professor, handyman, critical feedback loop, or jester. While some focus on doomerism or cryptobro hype cycles, I’m using it to solve automation riddles, pick new shrubs for the garden, write that c++ program I never finished 25 years ago, and deep research on topics impactful to my life and community. Many times, they’re things I wouldn’t have attempted two years ago.

Today is the 173rd birthday of Vincent van Gogh

Today is the 173rd birthday of Vincent van Gogh. We know him as a timeless artist, but his path was anything but a straight line.

Before he ever picked up a paintbrush, Van Gogh was a deeply faithful man who worked as a missionary to coal miners in Belgium. He gave away his clothes, slept on straw, and was eventually dismissed for being “too zealous.” He failed as an art dealer, a teacher, and a bookkeeper. He didn’t start painting seriously until he was nearly 30.

I'm convinced that writing is dead.

I’m convinced that writing is dead. I’ve been writing for decades. In the 90s and early 2000s, while learning tech, I tinkered a lot while blogging about the journey. It cemented what I learned, shared knowledge with others, and gave me a helpful career reference point.

During Marine bootcamp, my rack mate Kuchenbecker let slip that I knew tech. Voila. I was named scribe. While recruits slept, I got to build a Microsoft Access recruit-tracking app so Drill Instructors could track metrics. Give a nerd a computer and they’ll use it. I sent short letters to family checking in and saying hi. The DIs would’ve blown a gasket if they’d found out about this little “integrity violation.”
